The Secret Ingredient in Fortress Decking: Bamboo

09.08.21 10:36 AM By aram
You’ve probably heard about composite decking. Composite deck boards are known for their durability. Compared to wood, they require far less maintenance, offering long-lasting colors and finishes that never need to be sanded, stained, or painted. But did you know that Fortress Decking discovered a way to make decking even more resilient? Their secret? Bamboo.

Adding Bamboo to the Mix

Fortress Decking offers two unique lines of decking that are revolutionizing the industry with bamboo-infused construction. The Infinity I-Series and Apex Series feature high-density bamboo cores co-extruded with recycled plastic components. An exclusively engineered cap adds further durability.

Why Bamboo?

Fortress Decking looked to bamboo as a solution when other decking boards couldn’t hold up in the harsh climate of South Africa. Now, their innovative technology is being used to deliver durable decking to settings worldwide.

Fortress Decking chose bamboo for three distinct advantages.

1. It’s mold and mildew resistant

Fortress Decking mixes bamboo with a polymer matrix. The bamboo particles are separated, and each particle is encapsulated in polymer. This prevents moisture from spreading through the material.
This process is distinct from other products that incorporate strand-woven bamboo. The strand- woven bamboo has properties that are more similar to wood. The material may contain traces of starch, which can mold, and the strands are processed differently, so they are not as impervious to moisture. Fortress Decking does not use strand-woven bamboo.
In the Fortress Decking process, the bamboo mixes evenly into the polymer matrix, and anti-mold additives are used to prevent mold. The result is a decking material that is ready to take on moisture and humidity and come out on top.

2. It’s sustainable

In tropical climates, a tree can reach full growth in 30 years. In cooler regions, it can take several hundred years for a tree to reach maturity.

If you harvest bamboo, in three years, it is fully grown again.

Because bamboo grows so quickly, it is a more sustainable solution than wood. Its quick re-growth rate makes it an ideal solution for building materials.
Due to their responsible building practices, Fortress Decking is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. The company is dedicated to delivering sustainable solutions that customers can feel good about.

3. It’s light-weight and robust

Imagine if you could build a deck with material that is roughly half the weight of typical boards but offers even more durability. With bamboo, Fortress Decking has made this a reality. Featuring a foam core reinforced with bamboo, these boards are 45% lighter than composite decking. This makes handling and installation far easier.
The boards also remain true to form. The unique material expands and contracts about 25% less than over PVC deck boards. This quality makes the boards more consistent for installation and reduces gaps for smoother, more attractive finishes long-term.
Fortress Decking’s manufacturing process produces decking that is dense, scratch resistant, slip resistant, and remains true to form. The result is a decking line that offers industry-leading style, durability, and aesthetics.
